You can arrange any number of items in any number of tracks and use audio processing plug-ins (DirectX and Jesusonic). It reads WAV, OGG, and MP3 files, and records WAV files. REAPER supports ASIO, Kernel Streaming, WaveOut, and DirectSound for playback and recording. It provides an extensive set of features, but is a very small and lightweight application (the installer is less than 1 megabyte, and includes many effects and a sample project). ![]() If you are not using lanes for layering and your use case is recording multiple takes to choose from, you may prefer the behavior if you disable 'add lanes in layers', in which case adding a new recording will cause the newly recorded-into lane to play back exclusively, and REAPER will not worry about putting the recording into a lane that is already playing back.REAPER is a powerful but sensible Windows application that lets you record, arrange, edit, and render multi-track waveform audio. ![]() We could tweak the logic so REAPER would be willing to add recordings to an empty lane that is not playing back. With the 'add lanes in layers' setting enabled, REAPER will attempt to add new recordings in a way that does not change the playback state of any existing lanes, which means REAPER won't put a new recording into a lane that is currently not playing back, even if that lane is empty. ![]() It sounds like you have all three settings enabled. I think the behavior you are seeing is due to the the interaction between three settings: 'Recording / Add lanes in layers', 'Recording / Record into first available lane', and 'Delete lanes / Automatically remove empty lanes at bottom of track'.
